AI writing tools

The content of this article was originally published in the Elevate Your Marketing newsletter and has been republished and repurposed here with the author’s permission.

For many of us, what comes to mind when we hear the term ‘artificial intelligence’ is its application in fields like fraud prevention, AI-powered voice assistants, facial recognition, personalized shopping, etc. However, AI has shown its presence in what probably is not seen as many as an area that would be taken over by it – marketing.

While AI finds its application in various domains in marketing such as video creation, design, text-to-speech conversion, advertising, etc., the way in which it has changed content creation is more amusing than anything else.

Benefits of using AI writing tools

AI-based software tools help to automatically create content for various content types. They make the process of content ideation, structuring, and generation much faster and easier. What previously took several hours to finish can now be done in an hour or even lesser. Some of the content types you can create using AI writing tools are:

  • Ad copy (ad headlines, link descriptions, listicles)
  • Website copy (call to action, social proof, landing page, headings)
  • Blog content (intro, outlines, topic ideas, body content, conclusion)
  • Email content (product promotions, newsletter content)
  • Social media content (carousel posts, hashtags, video descriptions, post captions)
  • Sales copy (using various frameworks such as PAS, AIDA, before-after-bridge)
  • Product descriptions

The cool part of AI-based content generation is that for most of the content types, all you need to give is a title and a short description of the content you wish to create, and the tool takes care of the rest.

In addition to creating content from scratch, AI writing assistants also offer certain other tools helpful for content writing. Some of them include:

  • Bullet point to paragraph convertor
  • Passive to active voice convertor
  • Simplifying and rewriting sentences
  • Adjective and verb suggestions
  • Resume assistance

Some AI writing tools also have the ability to craft branding or business-related content such as value proposition, mission and vision statements, brand voice, etc.

It gets even more interesting when these tools help you write SEO-relevant content such as meta descriptions, blog ideas or topics, and sometimes even long-form content such as a blog post.

Can AI writing tools replace humans?

AI is getting smarter every day. The more data AI and machine learning engines ingest, the better and more accurate they become. With ChatGPT and GPT-4 significantly improving accuracy from its predecessors, we are seeing rapid developments in the space. However, AI – at least today – cannot replace human creativity and logical thinking. The ability of the human brain to process historical information, and especially adapt to a new situation (or dataset) is far superior to what AI can do.

If you are a content writer, should you be worried?

Since the flavor of creativity and context humans can add to content is still not replaceable, you really do not need to panic if you are a content writer (and of course only if you are good at it). However, how you can add more value and become a better content writer – and make sure you are not obsolete – is by learning to use these tools to save your time and improve the richness of your content. As in the case of any other technology, machines and software are best utilized when they complement human actions.

I can go on and on talking about the wonderful things AI can do to help content marketers. And we are going to delve more into the details of how AI is changing marketing as a whole in some of the upcoming articles.

15 AI writing tools you should explore in 2023

The AI revolution is here. From ChatGPT and DALL-E 2 to Bard and Project Magi, there have been plenty of recent advancements and initiatives in the space. This new wave has led to the rise of a plethora of AI content writing tools. I have covered 15 of them in this article. Do make sure to check out the other options out there as well.

1. Jasper

Any list should start with the favorite, shouldn’t it? And it is Jasper (previously known as Jarvis) that makes it to the top of the list with its ability to automatically generate not just short-form content, but long-form content as well (and of course, there are other tools using which you can do the same. But I like Jasper more, maybe because the company has grown exponentially in such a short span of time).

Jasper helps you generate content that is engaging and SEO friendly. As claimed by the tool, it can read 10% of the internet to collect enough information to write content on pretty much any topic and niche. The tool also promises the content to be plagiarism-free.

Here is a 10-minute demo of Jasper that explains in detail how it works:

Though Jasper is my favorite, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the tool is the best for your business. You need to choose the right one by doing a thorough evaluation based on parameters such as user-friendliness, speed of content creation, value for money, positive reviews, fit for your niche, etc.

2. Copy AI

Copy AI helps you automatically generate content for blog intros, product descriptions, ad headlines, social media posts, and more. The platform also offers the option to create content based on various copywriting frameworks such as PAS, AIDA, before-after-bridge, etc. With more than 70 tools, Copy AI can help you save time and augment your content creation efforts.

Given below is the introduction video of Copy AI:

3. Anyword

Anyword positions itself as a data-driven AI writing assistant that comes with a feature called predictive scoring. This feature assesses the quality of the content recommendations given by the platform to help you change or refine them further. Like Jasper and Copy AI, you can use Anyword to create social media posts, landing pages, long-form content, product descriptions, etc.

Here is a video from Anyword that explains how to create a good YouTube video description automatically:

4. Frase

Let me ‘refrase’ how Frase explains itself on the website: Frase AI helps you research, create, and optimize SEO-relevant content fast – in a few minutes instead of hours. Frase focuses on its ability to create content that can rank in SERP (Search Engine Results Page). The platform also attempts to differentiate itself from the competition by highlighting its ability to curate high-quality and relevant content.

Please check out the below explainer video to understand how Frase works:

5. Copysmith

Copysmith is an AI writing tool targeted at e-commerce companies and marketing agencies. The key differentiator of the tool is its ability to generate product descriptions in bulk – which is very handy for e-commerce brands. Have a look at the below video to understand how Copysmith works:

Copysmith also comes with ready-to-use integrations with Frase, Google Ads, Google Docs, and even Woo Commerce. So, it is a tool worth checking out, especially if you are into the e-commerce space.

6. Contentbot.ai

Contentbot.ai is an AI writing assistant that is similar to Copy AI and Copysmith, but with the ability to create long-form content quickly. The tool can help you create anything from sales copy to blog ideas to google ads copy and landing page content.

Do check out the below video to learn how Contentbot’s newly launched InstructBot changes the way content can be written:

7. Rytr

The name of the tool caught your eye. Didn’t it? So did the CTA text on their home page that says ‘Start ryting’.

Similar to some of the tools we discussed above, Rytr helps you automatically generate blog ideas, blog content, email copy, ad copy, call-to-action phrases, and more.

One of the differentiators of Rytr is that it offers recruiters the ability to create content for interview questions and job descriptions. The tool also has a use case for responding to reviews and messages in a thoughtful and engaging manner. Rytr supports 30+ languages including French, German, Arabic, Italian, and even Japanese and Hindi.

Given below is a short explainer video of Rytr. It does a good job of explaining what the tool can do (though I didn’t like the AI-generated voice over).

8. Wordtune

Wordtune is an AI-based writing assistant that helps rephrase your sentences to make them more engaging and readable. The tool also offers a chrome extension that makes it easier for you to edit and rewrite content.

Have a look at the below image to understand the suggestions given by the tool to rewrite a sentence I put in:

WordTune - free AI writing tool

One of the good things about Wordtune is that it is very easy to use. It is also a very affordable option for those who do not have many dollars to invest. You could start with the free version of the tool using which you can rewrite up to 10 times a day.

9. Peppertype AI

Peppertype AI is another content generation tool that leverages GPT-3 to automate content creation. It is used by some of the top brands including Amazon, Adobe, Swiggy, and Facebook.

The tool is a good to try for sellers on Amazon (or any e-commerce website) with features such as Amazon product title, product features, and product description. It also helps you create content leveraging some of the most popular copywriting frameworks including AIDA, Before-After-Bridge, PAS, etc.

One of the useful content generators offered by Peppertype AI is the ‘First to Third Person’ converter using which you can change the narration style of the content you produce.

Please watch the below video to learn how the tool works:

10. Headlime

Headlime is an AI content generation platform that focuses more on copy and positions itself as a tool that saves you time. It comes with a suite of content creation products including an AI blog assistant, AI copywriter, AI page builder, Copy generator, Document generator, and Headlime for team.

One of Headlime’s strengths is that it offers thousands of examples and templates for different types of content and copy. This is a useful resource for writers who are looking for inspiration and learn from the best copy out there.

Given below is the intro video of Headlime:

11. Quillbot

Quillbot is a free-to-use paraphrasing tool similar to Wordtune that helps to refine your sentences to make them look more professional. It also lets you write in different tones including formal, simple, and creative. However, these styles come with only the premium version of Quillbot.

To understand how the tool works, have a look at the below example where the tool rewrote a sentence I wrote:

paraphrasing tool quillbot ai

The tool is a lifesaver for beginners and those who do not have good enough copywriting skills. However, just like any other AI-based content generation tool, you might have to still refine the output given by Quillbot, especially if you are one of those advanced copywriters who aspire to be in the top 1%.

12. Writecream

Writecream differentiates from the competition by offering some additional content generation tools including icebreakers (using personalized emails and LinkedIn messages), YouTube voiceovers, and podcast voiceovers. The tool also stands out by offering image icebreakers using which you can automatically generate images by simply entering the URL of your prospect’s website or LinkedIn profile.

The below video gives an overview of Writecream’s features:

It also comes with a unique feature called Backlink Message Generator that will help you quickly create emails or messages for your backlink outreach.

Writecream is a good choice to go with if you are looking for some of the cool features we discussed above.

13. SpellTools

SpellTools is one among the many AI-based tools that have become popular after the advent of GPT-3. It offers almost all the content creation features offered by the other content generation tools including website copy, Facebook and google ads copy, product description, content ideas, etc.

In addition to these, SpellTools also helps you generate creative startup names. Unlike a lot of the other tools in the list, it comes with a content generator for personal bios as well.

Check out the below video that walks through how to use the platform for generating product descriptions for e-commerce:

14. Kafkai

Kafkai is one of the less-known names in the AI-based content writing space. They claim to be the first AI writing tool built specifically for marketers and SEO professionals. It is one of the very few tools that explain in detail how the tech behind the platform works. The platform also offers a unique feature to write content focused on a specific niche.

However, it doesn’t come with features as exhaustive as some of the most popular tools in the market. Given that Kafkai can be used only for writing articles, if you are looking for an end-to-end content generation tool, this might not be for you.

Do check out the below video to learn more about the tool:

15. Growthbar

Growthbar is an SEO-focused AI content writing tool that is developed based on the very same framework the majority of these tools work based on – OpenAI’s GPT-3. In Growthbar, AI-based writing is only one of the solutions. It also offers tools for SEO including a keyword research tool and a keyword ranking tool.

The USP of Growthbar is its extreme focus on SEO leveraging the company’s experience in offering SEO writing services. Hence if you are looking for an SEO and a content generation tool both in one place, this tool is worth checking out.
